Elect a Democrat and Die - Giuliani

Giuliani joins the song.
Rudy Giuliani said if a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001.

But if a Republican is elected, he said, especially if it is him, terrorist attacks can be anticipated and stopped.....

“This war ends when they stop coming here to kill us!” Giuliani said. “Never ever again will this country ever be on defense waiting for (terrorists) to attack us if I have anything to say about it. And make no mistake, the Democrats want to put us back on defense!”

Giuliani said terrorists “hate us and not because of anything bad we have done; it has nothing to do with Israel and Palestine. They hate us for the freedoms we have and the freedoms we want to share with the world.”

Giuliani continued: “The freedoms we have are in conflict with the perverted, maniacal interpretation of their religion.” He said Americans would fight for “freedom for women, the freedom of elections, freedom of religion, and the freedom of our economy.”

Addressing the terrorists directly, Giuliani said: “We are not giving that up and you are not going to take it from us!”

The crowd thundered its approval.

I'm not calling Giuliani Hitler, but reading that excerpt, I feel real echoes of a rally.

However, as to how the Iraq plan is going, "I don't know the answer to that."

Later: Obama responds.

  • He rants the old rants of the frustrated loons. Rants that were shown to be spun on the wheel of hallucination and delusion; as rooted in reality as a drug induced paranoia.

The fear ship has sailed and we all waved bon voyage last November. Yet the "leaders" in the Republican party cling to it's ropes and become ever more shrill and unhinged as they're dragged into its wake. I can only hope they all soon feel the sweet release of political death.

Our mission in Iraq may not be complete, but the sell-by date for military efficacy has long sense passed. Americans, hopefully, can smell the stink of fear mongering and are rightly put off by the stench.

  • I really wonder if the fear ship has really sailed. Fear/insecurity has been almost bred into us by advertising over the years.

More later. My computer is being attacked.

  • On hold with norton antivirus.

My question was, I wonder how much the fear has lost its impact if it's "rebranded" under Giuliani.

  • I think the Dems, newly in control of congress, are united, on message, and taking "no shit from nobody." Their position in the leadership has forced the mainstream media to pay attention when their leadership speaks, and recent polling shows they have credibility in the minds of American voters... more credibility than past Republican congresses.

Because of this -- and because the Repub. message is becoming more shrill, more desperate and more over the top -- I think, by and large, the fear ship has sailed. Or at least the vote-Repub-or-die ship has sailed. I think Americans are looking for leaders, not paternalistic authoritarians.

Americans are looking for ways to move forward -- both with their lives as Americans and with American foreign policy. The Repubs are telling them to shut up and be scared, and the Dems are saying it time to come out of the shelter and begin the rebuilding. One is a message of desperation, the other a message of strength...

At least that's how I see it. But, as the saying goes, you'll never go broke underestimating the ignorance of the American public.

  • sorry... that quote should have read:

"You’ll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

P.T. Barnum, if I remember my high school classes correctly.

  • I tend to agree with you generally, but because of the power of the fear message, especially in the overhyped white suburbs, a rebranding to Giuliani might be partially effective.

I mean, fear sells. Look at the TV news or Datelines or what have you that hype highly unlikely threats to white middle class women and their children. Those things get huge ratings for what they are.

The whole nesting phenomena reflects a susceptibility to that fear message.

And it's the nesting suburbs where this next election will be fought.

I tend to agree that the Bush fear message has lost its bite, but I wonder, with the underlying climate, whether that message has been permanently defanged. You know?
