The Dems have some cool, tough ladies who have spent their careers dealing with men who's egos far outstrip their actual worth. Now their holding the gavel and so far have shown themselves to be head and shoulders above their predecessors.
I think some (many?) Republican politicians have a visceral aversion to the thought of women in power... or at least with power over them. Just look at Bush, Ihofe, etc. The women (Boxer, Pelosi, etc.) have managed to be calm yet commanding, while the men are shrill and hysterical. I think it's a riot!

Unfortunately, there is still a bias against women, that a man is "assertive," and a woman doing the same thing is a "bitch."
It adds a significant extra onus on female politicians. They're expected to have "grace" rather than be forceful.
It's bullshit, but it's reality.
So, unfortunately calm is their only real way.
However, on the flip side, when a woman does successfully use that calm/commanding, it does have a cultural resonance of emascualtion of the man.
So, they have an unfortunate bigger hurdle, but when it's pulled off, that same cultural sexism makes the success even more effective.
It's messed up.
