Political bits

Webb is polling +4 over Allen in several neutral polls. (Notice that the undecideds are getting very small.)

And, I don't think this video of Allen's staff tackling/attacking a blogger will help his cause. According to Politicalwire, the question that caused the incident was "Why did you spit on your first wife?" That sealed divorce is an issue now.

Menendez is polling +5 and +7 over Kean in neutral polls.

I don't buy CNN's Tenn polling Corker +8. (Polling history.)

Dear John Kerry, go away! True or not, you have been successfully villanized. I know you want to be somebody, but, right now, you're not helping. (video) The Republicans were scattered and on the defense and you've given them fuel.

And, Tony Snow is desperate and an asshole:
Q Tony, let me just ask your plan about this idea of -- I believe it was called withdrawal without assurance of victory in Iraq, which I think was the summary of the Democrats' position. And it gets back to this notion of this being a referendum, because isn't what the President putting forward -- is to stay without an assurance of victory in Iraq?

MR. SNOW: No, it's to stay with a determination of victory.

Q There's no assurance of victory in Iraq.

MR. SNOW: Well, Jim, are you saying that you don't think our troops are going to be able to complete the job?

(And, I can assure you that unlike many of the big bloggers you might visit, no political candidate has paid me s**t!)

Update: Bush's Georgia stop had plenty of empty seats.

This is funny. Blogactive, the gay activist guy has produced a satire commercial against Mehlman with an over stereotyped gay guy in the middle mocking the Ford ad that Mehlman said was OK.

Southpark: "Please Tom Cruise, come out of the closet."

  • "Dear John Kerry, disappear for awhile."

Sadly, I must wholeheartedly agree with you. No matter how much Kerry tries to defend the troops, the W.H. will always deflect the spotlight to Kerry, personally, and the media moths will follow.

Notice how low key the other Washington establishment Dems have been: Biden, Schumer, Kennedy, Waxman, Conyers, etc. I think it's wise to let the new blood take the lead... the Obama's and ???.

The establishment Dems better walk softly and not delude themselves into thinking the netroots pro-Democratic stance is in any way an endorsement of their particular candidacies or agendas... as if the Lamont CT primary victory wasn't enough of a shot across the bow of the old guard.

Today it's the new guard -- the grassroots -- in the Democratic party that gives me hope for a functioning government -- a common sense progressive government which will put the people first. If they turn into corrupt, rubber-stamping hacks down the road, the fact they have a (D) after their names will do them no good in my book. I am no lamb to be led by the nose...

  • "no political candidate has paid me s**t!"

I can just hear the sleazy neg-ad voice over, dripping with contempt...

"Mark 'claaaims' he doesn't take money to push his far left-wing agenda, but what is it he really doesn't what us to know?

In the past Mark's been spotted driving alone and pulling into rest areas along the highway... a known practice for homosexuals looking to ply their so-called 'alternate lifestyle'..."

OK. It's funny in my head. But I'm doing a reeeaaaaly good Phil Hartman (may he rest in peace) voice over. And the creepy music playing in the background is adding to the effect.

    I scare myself sometimes. :)

  • I came home to find out the airwaves are aflame with how John Kerry "slandered" the troops and the preznit is demanding an apology, blah blah blah...

Sigh - I don't understand why John Kerry just won't shut the fuck up. This gaffe will cost Dems at least 2 news cycles. And let's face it, Repubes had it planned - I'm sure they've been following Dean, Kerry, Pelosi and other "liberals" waiting for one of them to make a mistake so they could blow it up into a full-fledged "controversy." I dunno if any of this really matters to the local and state races, but I do know that Kerry played right into Rove's hands, that this was one of the mini-October Surprises planned to keep Iraq out of the news (or put Iraq in the news into the old '04 way - Dems are weak and they hate the military.)

Ugh. I'm so sick of John Kerry that I really wish he would do us all a favor and spontaneously combust from his own overblown ego.

  • reality-based educator, you really shouldn't hold your feeling back... Tell us what you REALLY think. :)

It will be interesting... there are cable news cycles and there are real news cycles. It will be interesting to see if this gets much play on broadcast/print or if this is just cable-cruft.

By Blogger -epm, at 4:03 PM

  • I know, I know, -epm - I tend to suppress my thoughts and feelings.

That's a good point about the difference btwn the cable news cycle and the real news cycle.

  • EPM, that's exactly my point, the Dems have been so good this time at not supplying ammunition, and now this. Bush on the ropes in Iraq, Republicans scampering in fear, and John Kerry hands them the "you don't support the troops."

And, EPM, that is a really good point about the TV and print news cycles. That's why they had the president chime in, to try to force this into the papers. It wouldn't be there if the Repubs don't push it.

Reality, that's exactly what I wanted to say. But, see, he really still wants to be the guy. And he's not the guy.

He seems to have mistaken the passionate anti-bush support he got as actually being about him.

He seriously believes that he will be the guy. Not a chance. His ego is getting in the way of the party.

  • I hear what you are saying about Kerry and would prefer that this had never happened but there is something rather pathetic about the Democrats laying low so as not to rile the Republican attack dogs. I actually liked Kerry's comeback.

  • I'm agog that the President of the United States could not fill a stadium in East Podunk, America.

It makes you wonder where they're pulling these poll numbers from. The races are much closer than they should be.

  • Re: Kerry.

Kerry's gaff made the 11-o'clock news here in the Boston market.

Good political advise: no matter what Kerry intended to say or how out of context the Repubs are taking it, it's all immaterial. At this point it's a political issue for Dems and Kerry has to suck it up and make this go away no matter what it takes. Someone's got to tell Kerry it's not all about him; he's not running for election this year.

Like it or not it's called politics not debate club. For the next 7 day's I don't give a rat's ass about John Kerry or his political ambitions. Please John, for the next 7 days just go to Martha's Vineyard and chill out. Next Wednesday you can talk till you're blue in the face.

  • I have to admit I cheered at what he came back with to the right and the Dub. What I wouldn't give to be on a stage with those pugs and wag my finger at them.

But I was shocked about the bloggers getting paid by the 'man'...they've become yuppies of the blogsphere. Or can I assume that they blog with a candidate that they really would vote for and like. Because if not...that would make them whores and opportunists for money. I've mixed feelings on this...how about you Mike? Is this palatable for you?

  • Regarding Kerry (again), I found this comment BBC journalist Richard Greene:

"[H]is tough talk reminded me of an old political maxim: If you're explaining, you're losing."

My friends, we simply cannot afford to lose.

By Blogger -epm, at 11:00 PM

  • Ptelea, I agree, both in principle and as to Kerry's response, but, at this critical point, all momentum was rolling towards the Dems, and anything that even slows it is a big mistake. I agree with the principle of the fight, but now is not the time.

Libby, I think it was open/free, too. It's a big venue, and watching clips on TV they generated noise, but I found that surprising as well.

EPM, But Kerry thinks he is running... for 2008. That's the problem. I think someone needs to pull him aside and give him not just the present reality, but also the 2008 reality. He has no chance. The support was not largely John Kerry support. In 2008, he's going to have a "Joementum" campaign. Like I said, Kerry, just go away.

Sumo, I can't really blame them. If somebody came along told me I was brilliant and offered me $100,000 for part time consulting, I'd ditch the blog and go, but I do think it represents a bit of a conflict of interest. The biggest problem to me is that they aren't really overboard about the whole thing. I don't really have an issue with them taking a check, that's all the experts on TV, but when they're touting candidates and raising money for them, I think that's wrong. I think it's really an issue of disclosure more than anything else. That's why I linked it. So, maybe people would know.

EPM again, you're right about explaining, but more than that, anything that dents the momentum is an absolute sin.
