The South Dakota abortion ban looks likely to be voted down

I was speaking with a friend last night whose mother (an occasional reader, "Hi Ginny,") has been extremely involved in the South Dakota vote on their recently passed total abortion ban (which includes rape and incest.)

The word is that this law is extremely likely to be voted down by the fine people of South Dakota.

UPDATE: The NYTimes has a story on it tonight.

  • Let's hope this is true.

While I'm no fan of abortion, I realize that outlawing abortion will do NOTHING to reduce the demand for abortion.

Then again the anti-abortion crowd largely doesn't care. They seem more interested in posturing their own moral superiority and ensuring the suffering of "sinners," than working to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies in the first place.

After all, what good is it to be a Christian if you don't get to stone a few sluts now and again... metaphorically speaking, of course.

  • OK. I should have used quotes ("") around the term Christian in my last reply.

There's about a zillion different religious denominations that profess to be Christian, and not all preach contempt for non-sect members and the religification of government.

  • Agreed. This was intended to be a test case in a small state the Republicans could afford to play with. (They may lose several offices because of this.) But the guy they chose as point man went crazy and went way further than they intended. It was intended to be a big election year divider for them, but the law came up so far on one side, that they had to let it go.

  • This one may be doomed, but the next one or the next one won't be.

They got greedy this time with the absolutism, rejecting exceptions for incest and rape. The next crop won't be so blind, and they might be in an even more conservative state.

We'll see abortion before the Supreme Court again within the decade.

  • I agree.

One other bit of feedback from Ginny is that she was shocked that in polling, if rape and incest are excluded, this law could've survived a vote.

Now, South Dakota is pretty far down the scale, that's why it was chosen, but it will be back.

  • Well...goody!

  • It is some good news, but like I said before, if rape and incest are excluded, it could've passed.
