Foreign policy heresy
I think it is in Musharraf's interests to keep the Afghanistan conflict going in its present state. So long as the Pashtun, Taleban, and Al Qaeda spend their energies in Afghanistan they won't turn them towards his regime.
I think that's the game our "ally" is playing.

This is a good point.
There are two forces Musharraf has to deal with: the threats of the US and the actions of the Taliban (and other radicals). Karzai aligned closely with the US thinking the Taliban (and other radicals) were impotent. Now he's painted in a corner. Best for Musharraf to be a tacit ally of the Taliban and keep their focus on Afghanistan. After all, is the US really going to bomb Pakistan back to the stone age at this point in the game. I don't think so.

Add in India on the other side, too. With some work, that Sunni movement can be pointed at them as well, and it serves as a brake against Indian military action.
And, no, because Pakistan has nukes, fissile material, plans, etc which would spread in the wind following any attack.
