The Best and Brightest - How do you fix the culture?

US Special Forces "face shortages of elite special operations forces that are playing a leading role in the war against terrorism." One of the main culprits are private contractors who are hiring seasoned professionals away.

Top DHS and anti-terror officials are finding the pastures greener in the private sector as well, often going into lobbying positions with contractors.

And now we have reports that the FBI is having revolving door problems in its top antiterror positions with top agents going into corporate security positions.

(Also make note of the CIA purge/exodus under the Bush administration and Porter Goss.)

  • For several years now, the number of individuals employed in private security has outnumbered those in the nation's police forces.
The 'Brazilianization' of our country, where the rich live in guarded camps disguised as "estate" living really hit me as I drove through a wealthy part of town today. Check out some of the striking resemblances in housing to medieval fortresses in your town. They've actually started to abondon the disguising part...

  • Do you think the CIA purge and attempted downgrading was a bit premature?
Seems like if you destroy the culture and history of an outfit like that, the usurpers have a dramatically steep learning curve.
Doesn't look like good security planning to me, it looks more like politics.

  • Bill, I'll answer you at lunch.

Cartledge. Yeah, that was a good part of the intent. To purge the CIA of people who weren't "playing ball," and in so doing move the reponsibilities over to the Pentagon. And it did downgrade the abilities.
