UNITED NATIONS -- The United States strongly criticized the No. 2 United Nations official on Wednesday for a speech he gave that accused the U.S. government of leaving Americans in the dark about the world body's good works.
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton called Tuesday's speech by Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown a "very, very grave mistake" that could undermine Secretary-General Kofi Annan's efforts to push through an ambitious reform agenda at the world organization.

How can they declare the UN 'irrelevant' is the number two guy says the body is doing 'good work'? Must not have gotten the pre-Iran invasion propaganda memo.

It just made me laugh that after years of hearing the Bushies excoriate the press for not reporting "the good news," that Bolton would react so violently to the same accusation.
Of course, remembering from his confirmation, violently is what we should expect from him.
It's just not very diplomatic.

Yup. I thought it somehow typified the fears coming out of his confirmation. I mean, this is the second top guy at the UN, and Bolton blows a gasket.
