A little more Truthout/"Rove Indicted" story.

If you're tracking the controversy around the Leopold story that Rove has already been indicted, we have another affirmation from Mark Ash, one of the Truthout.org editors, that they are standing by the main tent poles of their story that Rove has already been indicted, and that Fitzgerald met with Rove's team a week ago Friday.

(I still can't get the Truthout forums to work, so you're going to have to make due with that link)

UPDATE: Howard Kurtz the WaPo's Media columnist offers coverage of Leopold's piece repeating every charge against him early in the article, "was written by a journalist who has battled drug addiction and mental illness and been convicted of grand larceny."

This column doesn't shed any new light on whether the piece was true or not, repeating Luskin and Corallo's denials, but it does smell an awful lot like pushback. True or not, the politics of the article has ruffled feathers.

  • With all due respect to Mark Ash, given their recent performance they can't be believed. Leopold said he's reveal his sources if he was burned. They might not think they've been burned in substance, but something went terribly wrong and they're taking the hit. That sounds like being burned to me.

Credibility is the issue, and they don't have much at this point.

  • You're right. They don't have much credibility right now, but this storyline they have presented fits with my sense of the investigation, that Fitzgerald's driving goal since the Libby indictment has been to get a plea deal out of Rove.

That doesn't mean the truthout report is correct, but at this point, I'm in wait and see mode. Because I covered it early, and keep getting questions from people about it, I'm probably going to keep posting information on it.

Please feel free to keep posting critical comments. It helps keep me honest.

  • Ok..this isn't critical..

I think everyone needs to lay off TO and Leopold.Randy Duke Cunningham denied denied and denied for years before he copped a plea..AND he was wearing a wire the last six months or so before the end of his free ride. Who's to say that isn't the game being played here? No retraction has been demanded as Ash said..

I hate the waiting..I want Fitzmas day to get here! :P

  • Everyday should be Fitzmas!

  • Just don't know, Dusty, we're at wait and see. I agree with the layoff TO for awhile, but it does have to be said that some of the "facts" in the article have turned out to be false. Again, I'm not willing to abandon the tentpoles of the story at this point, but the criticism does have some validity because of the failure on the "announcement by Friday."

That doesn't necessarily mean the reporting was wrong as it could have been true at the time of reporting, but that's where the criticism comes from. And I understand that.

I'm still waiting to really pass any judgement on the whole thing. One way or another, we'll know soon.

I added the update this morning that seems such a pushback from the Rove/Luskin side. I found that very interesting.

And, Zen, and Dusty, I don't know your reponse after the Libby indictment, but mine wasn't the joy I thought I would feel and had expected. Watching the press conference and coverage, I had this kind of sick feeling about the whole thing, as the real magnitude of it sank in. I don't know if I'm going to have a similar reaction this time, but I'm trying to remember that as I write about all this.

I really don't like Karl Rove, and I really think he should be indicted and out of there, but in a bigger picture, I don't see the indictment of top officials as a good thing. If you commit a crime, you should be indicted tried and convicted, but at the same time I find myself sad because our country has been dragged to this place by this administration.

Hope that doesn't diminish your joy. I just have a very vivid recall of my conflicted feelings on the day of the Libby indictment.

  • OTOH

If Howie Kurtz thinks Leopold is all wet, then Leopold is probably right!

    ;)

Frankly, I think Kurtz may have less credibility than George Bush.

  • I was trying to imply that by calling it pushback, but as you know, I don't do enough media criticism so I know next to nothing about Kurtz except his writing.

But the sheer agressiveness of the hatchetjob on Leopold in the third paragraph tells me alot.

Somebody wanted him discredited and fast.
