Cheney chides Russia
Does anyone else see the irony of Dick Cheney criticizing Russia on it's rollback on rights? The same Dick Cheney who espouses torture, warrantless wiretapping, secret prisons, indefinite non-reviewable detentions, is the greatest proponent of "strengthening the executive" and the classification of everything?
He also criticizes Russia for interfering in the governments of other countries.
Beyond the ridiculous hypocrisy, tell me again how this helps us in Iraq and Iran?
Oh, and on his Democracy and Freedom Tour, he's also making a stop in Kazakhstan, home to one of the world's worst torturing dictators.

Two minds with but a single thought. I saw Cheney's attack as the height of hypocrisy. I expect the Russian's will view it in a similar light.

Yeah, except that they can do something about it.
Think Iran's gonna get any easier? How about Gatt talks, or support against US interests?
We're not in a position to be picking unnecessary fights right now.

The US keeps going around acting like the schoolyard bully because it thinks it's bigger and tougher than the rest of the kids. One of these days all the rest of the kids are going to band together and get their own back.
Maybe that's the problem when you have at the helm of the country someone whose daddy got him out of every single scrape he's ever been in throughout his entire life. Somehow I don't think his daddy's going to be able to fix this one for him.

Rachie, the loss of control in the empires hinterlands is already happening. Bolivia nationalizing their nat gas, and we do nothing about it? Iran flaunting their nuclear program in our face with political cover from China and Russia? And what progress has been made on N. Korea in the whole Bush admin? Just examples, but there are tons more. Saudi/Nigeria making oil deals with China....
I'm kind of a big guy, and I learned long ago that it's usually far more effective to be big and menacing than to actually fight. Because if you can't beat up a smaller guy like Iraq, suddenly you're fear lever is gone.
Properly managed the threat is more effective than the force itself.
(And, Daddy's friends have either been burned by this admin, Scowcroft/powell, or have drifted more towards China, Saudis, UAE.)Mike

I couldn't really believe it when I heard it. I suppose it is a distraction tactic. He was, however, speaking to European leaders and they are very concerned about Russia's use of energy as a lever. Pandering to his audience?
His talk about human rights is just pointless. What exactly is he going to do about it? Exactly.
