Snapshot

From Laura Rozen
Bush's motorcade just pulled into the hotel up the street, and the helicopters are practically circling on top of our rooves. Living in this city since 2001, you feel under siege half the time. Update: Here go the sirens.

Elsewhere, across the top at Drudge
"On way to speech, Bush motorcade passed the EXXON station next to the Watergate, where gas prices were $3.29, $3.39 and $3.49 a gallon..."

  • This is a little off topic, but how is it that consumer confidence continues to rise even as oil and gas prices rise?

Seems a bit strange to me. The media keeps saying people are pissed off that it's costing so much to fill up their tanks, yet Reuters reports that confidence is up again for the month of April.

  • I saw that on CNN this morning, and I don't know. Best data indicates that the "booming" economy is largely only benefitting the top 30% with wages for the rest largely stagnant over the last several years.

And, I don't know which study that was based on, but it is usually a series of weighted questions aimed at the individual. "Do you expect the next year to be good for you economically?" "Are you going to make major purchases this year?"

You would really probably need to look at the mechanism by which a consumer is judged to be "confident."

Also, maybe people believe that their situation is improving but don't see hope across the economy for others. In other words, questions about the administration's competence on other issues would be contaminating the worldview of individuals who expect individually to be doing better next year.

    Just off the cuff.
