Picture of the Day

Flashback.

Nixon thought he had political capital for his second term, too.

  • It's amazing. I'm showing my students "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam." Chock full of documentary footage from that era. So many of the quotes are the same, the same platitudes, the same cliches...

the same suffering, death, and waste.

  • Yeah, Dave.

I have been drifting into the Vietnam era rhetoric and facts lately as well and the similarities are frightening.

Even the tactics, clear and hold, ink spots, or the "islands" of security tactics echo back to Vietnam's strategies. And now we're upping the aerial strikes.

And, Left of Center, it's interesting to me how Nixon has become Iconic in the American mind. The two hands upheld with the two finger victory signs...

  • We're destroying the town/suburb/mosque/village in order to save it... that kinda thing.
