I hope this is good a place as any to pop a question. What is your take on the mid terms now being a 'war election' as it seems will be the next Presidential elections? Bush's statment that their would be no withdrawal from Iraq under his watch seemed at first like an admission of some kind. This followed by an obvious holding pattern on Iran. Then thinking about it a bit, there is nothing like a bit of sabre rattling to assist struggling incumbents. For an administration so adept at pulling the wool, it seems like another stunt to this humble observer.
I agree. This will be another 'war election' because at this time, it's all the Republicans have, and any attempt to question any of the illegal White House activities will be used to illustrate how the Republicans are protecting us from the terrorists, while the Democrats want to let the terrorists win.
Sorry for the delay in response, I honestly, don't know. That may be the agenda, but there's alot that could happen between now and then.
One interesting theory I've heard is that Bush's stay until 2009 was an effort to establish a political battle line, a semiprecise date. If the dems want to criticize that, Bush can paint them soft on the war. I don't know if I buy it, but I found it interesting.
I think that making it a war election does recognize the obvious from the Republican side, and would allow them to go on the offense if things do start to get better, but there's just so much between now and then. We'll have more breaks on the corruption side, possible further indictments in the Plame case, probably at least one hurricane, which no matter how well handled will remind everyone of Katrina, and then there's Iraq where anything could happen on any given day.
Looking ahead, Iraq is certain to be on the debate list, but if housing prices fall, for instance, people will feel poor undermining the perception of the economy.
I just can't tell yet. Certainly an issue, but those elections are still a long way away. In the last six months, we've had NSA spying, Libby indictment, Katrina rebuilding, Iraq, Iraq, Iraq, supreme court justices, The South Dakota ban on abortion, Patriot Act, the shootdown of Soc Security reform, and a coming immigration debate. If the next six months are like that, or worse, Iraq may just be one issue among many.
This is not the America I was brought up to believe in.
This blog seeks to highlight abuse of power, deception, corruption, and just plain bad ideas in government and corporations.
