Reporting on Iraq isn't cool anymore
The NYTimes had a big story yesterday detailing the wounding and treatment of two US soldiers. Pretty good piece actually, but it got me to notice that Iraq has slid off the front pages again. But it hasn't gotten any less violent. (Source: Iraq Coalition Casualties) (Sorry for the formatting FU, but I wanted to include it all. The total of US soldiers killed in Iraq is now 2,267.)

Thanks for posting this. I was getting ready to do a similar roundup. The casualties have been rising again while the coverage has been falling.....again.

Honestly, it's a pretty hard story to cover in a compelling way for the media when reporters are limited to the green zone. There are no scoops, there is no "action" coverage. Pretty much it's just repeating the military press releases.
It's no Vietnam because there are no reporters out in the shit with the soldiers. If there were more of this type coverage, there would be more support against the war.
And, I do blame the media somewhat. Indeed, a reporter outside the gates is at big risk, but so were all the young war correspondents in Vietnam.
