Born at the Crest of the Empire

Dying only pays if you're already rich.

This just says it so well.
The contrast in President Bush's new budget could not be more stark. On one hand, he wants to eliminate what he likes to call the "death tax" -- a levy imposed on a handful of the nation's biggest estates. On the other, he wants to end Social Security's lump sum death benefit -- a $255 check that the families of many of the nation's poorest use to help pay for their funerals.

  • We ought to have a 100% death tax. Anything you can't spend should go into the public trough, instead of fortifying oligarchic dynasties.

And the SS death benefit should be raised. You can't bury someone for much under $1500 these days, and that's a bare bones funeral (sorry 'bout the pun).

  • Why aren't the Democrats jumping on this? Well, of course, I know why - they're a bunch of wimps.

They should be pointing out the Repubs have become a bunch of mean-spirited Scrooges. Where is the shared sacrifice?
