Picture of the Day - 3

These are women in the US army at a base somewhere in Iraq.

No editorial comment, just came across a bunch of soldier's photos showing some things that don't make the news.

(Nothing is inspiring me to write today, so, I'm just doing photos til something comes along. If you click on the photo, you will get a larger version where you can see the faces of all the men in their ARMY tees behind.)

  • They probably are soldiers. Remember, they work hard and usually play hard. When I was in the Army we had some crazy times too. Don't hold it against them.

  • Yes, according to the source, they are soldiers, and no, I don't hold it against them at all.

    That's why I said no editorial comment.

    Just a picture I ran across that runs counter to the images we conjure up when we say US soldiers in Iraq. A broader picture of their lives as it were.

    Not an indictment, not saying this goes on everywhere, just a snapshot.

    I do think there are probably some cultural sensitivity issues here, but I would guess this was done on base out of Iraqi sight.

  • Mike , I liked the pic and didn't mean to imply anything about your posting. Just commented about how some more prudish types who have little understanding of military life might react. Keep posting the interesting pics.

  • No offense taken.

    I am probably more willing than most to accept any excesses by the guys(and girls) on the front lines. (This one being pretty minor.)

    Quite frankly, I haven't been there, and really don't have any concept how I would react in that environment.

    If a soldier goes overboard in the field,even if it's extreme like abuse, or a questionable killing, that I can, to some degree, accept. Reprimand them, deal with it, but keep in mind where they were and what was going on.

    But when somebody removed from the action makes a premeditated decision, or lays out a matter of policy that crosses the line, they should be nailed to the wall.

    For instance, Abu Ghraib was horrible, and the lower downs should definitely be disciplined, but the crime appears to have come from higher up.

    And Gen. Geoffry Miller made decisions and set policy from behind a desk with alot of time to think about it.

    That's a whole different proposition.

    That's not just some soldiers who crossed a line, that's a Maj. Gen who led them there.

    Hmmm... A little unfair, I think, without knowing the motivations for my comment. Let's just say it's not a gender thing and it's not a "play hard" sort of thing. I guess it's more of a dignity thing.

    First, I don't see any men in the picture, and though we might conclude the the "men's mud rasslin' match" followed this one, I'll lay odds that neither you nor I believe that there was one. Second, I don't care how young and stupid you are, mud rasslin' is just plain undignified. Sure we all do stupid sh*t when we're young, but it's still a bitch when it's captured on camera.
