The Abramoff "defenses" are coming thick and fast

See this post predicting the spin patterns for context.

So far, I've already heard "business as usual" on Hardball which was met with disparaging disbelief from the other interviewee and Chris Matthews.

And, in the "Dems did it, too" category, I nominate Scott McClellan.

Q Scott, Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff has pleaded guilty to fraud and corruption and tax evasion here in the federal court in Washington. Already the DNC has put out a statement essentially saying that this is another example of what they are calling the "culture of corruption and abuse of power" that has been the hallmarks of the Bush administration. Any response?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, I've seen press reports that indicate that he has -- he and his clients have given to both Democrats and Republicans. So that's the first thing that I would say.

Atrios points out the clever wording here. His clients also gave money to the Dems, but Abramoff did not.

  • The Repugs are going to wiggle and jiggle like some wild and crazy NY strippers, but the bad is coming.

  • Hastert has already given money back since the news of Abramoff's squeeling and kneeling. Seems that Jack has been talking for some time now, and has alot to say. Also a side note.. It seems that the mother that held Scotty M to her tainted nipple when he was a baby has left the folds of the GOP to run for governor as an independant.Guess what state... did you say Texas? Smarty pants.

  • You know what, I might thinking of voting for the devil himself if it had a chance to defeat my current governor Rick Perry. It'll be interesting to see how the strayhorn thing plays out. She's got good contacts, and there are alot of, even religious, republicans who might give her the money necessary to take out Perry.

The next few weeks will be crucial though, to se if she gets the funding to run a real race or just peters out.

One other possibility is that she could sap enough repub vote to cause real problems. She's burning her bridges here, have to see how it plays out.

  • Interesting Mike.. My wife is a Texan and follows these kind of things closely. From what I understand Perry is the worst..well, there was Bush.

  • No, believe it or not, I think Perry is far worse, perhaps its just because the republicans control the Texas statehouse for the first time in forever.

Believe it or not, when Bush was Tx governor he actually di work part way across the aisle with the Dems, the centrist Dems and passed generally right center legislation.

Perry has gone of into crazy Fundie land, talking ID, and pushing an anti-gay agenda.
