McCain takes a stand

McCain fell out of my good graces when he stood by while the Bush campaign slimed Kerry the same way they had slimed him in the 2000 SC primary.

But this is pretty badass.

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Senate added language barring inhumane treatment of enemy combatants to legislation that sets military policy, the second major defense measure the chamber has amended with this provision.

The amendment sponsored by Arizona Republican Senator John McCain passed by a voice vote. It was attached to the Senate's fiscal 2006 defense spending bill Oct. 6 by a vote of 90-9. That bill is being negotiated with members of the U.S. House, including Republicans whose support is in question.

McCain said his intent is to prevent abuses such as those at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. He vowed today that his measure would be ``on every vehicle that goes through this body'' until it's enacted into law. ``It's not going away,'' he said on the Senate floor.

And just as a refresher, here's the list of 9 senators who voted for torture. I've already sent a couple letters to crazy Cornyn.

  • Yeah, it crushed me, especially because I was a strong McCain supporter in 2000. And then when it happened to Kerry, and McCain didn't say a word. I was apoplectic.

I still haven't forgiven Rove for racebaiting politics in SC, and to think that McCain could sell out and forgive them, and support them as they destroyed another vet who had served.

I'm sputtering with rage right now and it's been a year since this went down.

  • I always amazes me that people don't see through the lies and attacks of the rabid radical right. The attack on Max Cleland made me so angry I could have spit.

It was like watching a movie where the bad guys come in and beat up someone or issue a terrible threat -- like in Cape Fear -- and you are just sitting there rooting for the good guy to come along and give the bad guy his just desserts. That's my reaction to an attack on Cleland or McCain or the Swift Boaters on Kerry. I want Rove to be sorely disappointed by massive public rejection. But it just doesn't happen.

I just can't imagine why people swallow this stuff and let the Karl Roves of the world get away with it. It makes me furious. But time and again, these criminal manipulators of democracy and the voters do get away with it.

They are already starting with Hillary Clinton, whispering campaigns about her, and that reminds me of another one, the Rove attack on Texas Governor Ann W. Richards. She suddenly became the subject of a whispering campaign about her sexual orientation. There was never a classier lady than Ann Richards.

I don't know. Lincoln said you can fool all of the people some of the time. Seems the Republicans have fooled enough of the people enough of the time to put Bush and a lot of really bad people into office.

But maybe things are turning around. Maybe it just takes time and things to get really bad enough for people to finally notice. Bush's poll numbers these days are one sign they are finally beginning to notice.
