Who passed this?

I'd like to think Republicans are responsible for this law, but either a Democratic Congress or Clinton would likely have had to sign off on it.
The prospect of an extended leak has intensified concerns over what compensation BP is willing to pay, since a law passed after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill requires companies to pay for cleanup costs but no more than $75 million for other damage.

  • True. Not that there's any lack of Democratic corporatists, but perhaps (and I'm just making this up) this was a legislative compromise. Fro example, maybe in order to get double-hull tankers and other safety regulations through, the Dems had to compromise on the financial damages language. Financial damages and corporate liability has been a Republican rallying cry for generations...

But as I said, I'm just doing some wild guess spinning.

  • Yeah, I don't know, but it just seems a very, very low amount considering the potential coastline span that an oil spill could cover.

Sitting here now, it just seems a hell of a compromise.

(PS. How much do you think the oil firms paid to have this put in.)
