The dude's 80 years old. Political power -- particularly the Senate -- is a powerful narcotic. Once you get a hit of that power, you're hooked. You'll do "whatever it takes" to keep it. You leave one of three ways, voter intervention, scandal, or in a pine box.

Wasn't he the one so invested in the 'single bullet' theory, trying to get everyone convinced that there was a single JFK assassin.
