Thought for the Day

With healthcare passed and the teapartiers now causing some electoral trouble for the Republican establishment, it seems this year's "tea party" protests received alot less support than last year's "summer of rage."

There was a fair amount of lip service paid to them as no Republican wants to be on their bad side, but their particular crazy noise is just not as strategically useful going into an election year.

  • Interesting (or not) Tea Party survey trivia: Most of the self-identified Tea Partiers are: White, over 45 years old, earn higher than the median income. Also, they believe Obama is doing too much for blacks and minorities at the expense the rest of "us" by a factor of 50% over the national average response.

Whatever else the Tea Party movement is, it's not so much an anti-government movement as an "I've got mine, screw everyone else" movement. These are people, for the most part, who are beneficiaries of government programs (VA, SSI, Medicare, etc) who will fight tooth and nail to keep their "socialist" largesse. They just don't want the "government" to do anything for anyone else.

Hey kid! Get off my lawn!

  • Yeah. I linked that NYTimes survey yesterdy. I'm not too sure about the methodology, though.

The biggest finding, though, was that they were against socialism/anti-government, but didn't want changes to social security/medicare.

  • Sorry. I didn't click through your link.

The tea baggers are really more about sound bites and inflammatory rhetoric (this era's version of Red baiting). It's not like they really have any policy ideas except. It's all about tearing down "government" and establishing their own rule.

And they really haven't thought this through very well. Except for the manipulators... Armey, Gingrish, etc... who are working an angle to fill their pockets by using these true believers as stooges and goons.
