Because the Vietnamese had fought a war of independence for over 30 years and they weren't about to give up especially when Nixon was looking at $365,000.000.00 a day to run operations in SE Asia. They just fought them out to the bitter end. Then it turned into a "civil" bloodbath of the proportions that gives Karl Rove a woody.
This is not the America I was brought up to believe in.

After we built that huge natural gas pipeline, like we're going to abandon that. Yeah right. We're there FOREVER.

That's not fair. We're always everywhere forever.
The US has only not left a presence after the Vietnam war. After every other conflict, we've left bases.
