So, what was today for exactly?
With all the Senators just making their opening statements today, Sonia Sotomayor didn't really need to attend the first day of her confirmation hearing.

This is the opening day of a major Senate hearing. A day of pageantry and spectacle where the Senators don their best partisan affectations, spritz themselves with pompous self righteousness, and strut about in a ceremonial dance of puffery. The only thing real to them are the cameras. The person before them is merely a prop. A theatrical foil.
And so the charade of serious governance continues...

Yeah, I know. And Supreme Court nominations are a big deal, but unless Sotomayor endorses eating babies, she sails out of the committee which is 10 dems and 7 Repubs and sails through the 60 seat senate.
The media is covering this almost reflexively, because it's there. It's extremely unlikely to generate any news.
