Polling the Republican sinkhole

USAToday/Gallup polled Americans on what they think of the Republican party. The headline they chose is that there is still no identified "leader" with old white men making up the list. (Limbaugh, Cheney, McCain, and Gingrich.)

But what caught my eye were the totals down the left side. Skip down to "The Images They Project," and look at the top 10 words words offered to describe the Republican party. (No direction, cater to the rich, George Bush, close minded, cater to big business, bad economics, pro-war.)

Try to build a party off that.

  • ... And yet I feel the Senate Dems are still rather spineless in standing up to Republican threats of filibuster, etc.

  • Somewhat.

But do understand that Harry Reid is backroom, not in front of the cameras.

I tend to agree with you, so it's not an excuse, but at the same time know that anything he does is usually off camera.

  • True. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating... and some of the things that he's caved on have been troubling. While I don't want the Dem's to mimic the GOP with regard to draconian, goose-stepping tactics, I would like to see a more assertive progressive core... a more savvy and coordinated message coming from the left.

  • Agreed. He's never going to be good at message or public TV rallying. His strength has been negotiation which has yielded some results, but also meant concessions at every step.

Remember that he was chosen as leader after the 2004 elections. He was chosen to lead the minority party and get what he could when it looked like Dems might be in the wilderness for some time.

If they knew then what they know now, they might have picked Schumer, or somebody like him with a more power flexing skill set.
