You may remember that the Johnston/Palin wedding was supposed to be an eye-moistening spectacle that would give the McCain/Palin ticket a critical boost.
They propped Levi up like a mannequin at the RNC; the good boy doing the "right thing".
Now he's trailer trash that isn't fit to be around his own child.
The Republicans turned Johnston into "fair game" by implicitly endorsing him. By 2012 the narrative will be about the "deadbeat dad". The tabloids giveth, and the tabloids taketh away.
Well, I suppose that if the extended family continues in character, with wacky kids, lawsuits, and robberies, Sarah Palin will look quite a bit less appealing to the Right as time grinds on...
I'm so relieved that these cartoon characters are tabloid fodder now, rather than a vice presidential family. They're like an asteroid just barely missing Earth.
There will be a lot of sympathy on the poor Right for Palin. A lot of these people are living that life and they see it as 'normal' by rationalizing it.
For instance my wife and I adopted a baby this year. We also have a senior in High School. Lots of unthinking fundies assume the baby is our daughters. They live that life.
r8r, the latest arrest was Todd Palin's (half?) sister who got nailed for breaking and entering, a second time at the same location, and the theft of $200.
It's harder and harder to sell them as model family.
....
Anon, Yes there will be rationalizing, but that can only go so far. Plus, it'll greatly erode her with party leaders and donors, and, without backing and donors, it'll be nearly impossible.
Would you hitch your horse to that wagon not knowing what circus was going to jump out next?

I'm finding it increasingly hard to believe she comes back after the baby stuff, and the arrests, and all the orher.
I don't think she shines as clearly come 2011.
