Republicans try to jettison Bush

It seems the GOP consensus is to disown Bush because they've now decided he wasn't really a "conservative."

So, I guess the answer to the "civil war" question is, don't reach to the middle, just do what you were doing, but harder.

Good luck with that.

  • Does this make Bush's Legacy Project even more difficult? Does it matter?

And how many times can the Republicans change their tack and deflect blame before they become (more of) a joke.

  • Sounds like it's all about money. They were OK with the war spending but not the bail out.

  • EPM, yes, extremely. The key to legacy is to have the longest and most vocal defenders. You want your people touting your greatness after the other side has given up the argument. (especially without big acts to rely on.)

And nobody's promoting the Bush legacy right now. Not even think tanks like AEI.

    ....

Anon, I don't think it's about money at all. I think they're trying to find an issue. At this point, I think if the Dems said tax cuts, the Republicans would say "not enough." They're defining in opposition.

  • Yeah I know they are desperate to redefine themselves philosophically and morally but the way they talk it all comes down to taxes versus spending. Looks like they don't have anything else to say. What happened to abortion, stem cell research, family values, gay marriage, illegal immigration?

  • And I don't think tax and spend fires the base like abortion or gay marriage. If so, they'd have spent the last eight years on fiscal policy.

  • The financial crisis does seem to trump the other stuff.
