Debts to be paid....

The the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Nowak, says the US has an obligation to investigate Bush officials over torture, also saying there's already enough to prosecute Rumsfeld.

And, John Conyers re-subpoenas Karl Rove. With the Obama administration's different stance on executive privilege, it could get messy.

(I don't think either of these go anywhere.)

  • I think they only 'go anywhere' if there's a loud enough public outcry, and clear enough public support. The impetus has to come from regular people, since it would be bad politics for a sitting administration to go after the previous one. (No matter how much they may deserve it.)
It's also important to make sure that these efforts are part of the record of response to the previous administration, even if they don't 'go anywhere'.

Whether it's right or not, historically, lawbreakers in high places generally go scot-free (or get guillotined). The western world now has the chance to alter that mold -- to make leaders fear the judgment of the people after their terms in office.

  • Well, on the torture, they will always claim they were just following the legal advice of the OLC. "I'm not an expert, so I trusted those that were...."

I just don't see a real political way any retribution comes from the acts unless there is either some revelation or some result that horrifies.
