Senator Al Franken
It's looking very likely that Al Franken may be the next junior Senator from Minnesota.

I think I'm going to like hearing about Al Franken as a senator. So narrow a lead, so narrow a win -- he'll be on his very best behavior for Minnesota. He'll probably try to make good for the excesses of Jesse Ventura, he'll be on Prairie Home Companion, and he'll be doing his general best to do good work and be taken seriously as a legislator, aiming for a eventual reelection bid. I'm sure Minnesota could have done worse.

You know, you make a very good point. With this narrow win in the Dem/Obama wave year, he will likely moderate to some degree.
(And I do know that it was the third party candidate who complicated this and likely made it close, but, still, the Franken political team must also know that they substantially underperformed Obama.)

He's good enough, he's smart enough, and, gosh darn it, people like him.

I think he will prove himself to be a Wellstoneian senator. That is, he'll legislate as a populist-progressive. I want to believe that when Minnesotans see him in action -- and when they see him back in the state to meet folks as Senator -- his popularity and support will increase.
Franken has strong ideas, but I don't think he's an ideologue. While probably more liberal than Obama he share's the latter's openness to engaging his political opponents in debate.

There's a reason why Franken beat out a broad field for the DFL nomination. He has very smart political sense, especially for a newcomer and outsider in MN politics. While Barkley, the third-party candidate, was the major reason for Franken under-performing Obama, the other major factor was Coleman's utterly chameleon nature. He is able to convince people on both sides of "wedge" issues that he is on their side. That, combined with the incumbent advantage and Barkley, is what made things so close.

I gotta say that y'all are all way out in front of me on Franken. My knowledge of the Minn Senate race is pretty secondary. I was watching the Obama race.
