Fantasizing about Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan

Helene Cooper of the NYTimes theorizes a series of "dominoes" stemming from the Mumbai attacks.

Richard Clarke in the WaPo envisions two fictional meetings, Bin Laden and an ISI contact in Rawalpindi, and an Obama NSC meeting, trying to plan what's next.

And, the NYTimes has a frontpager on a new Afghanistan strategy which focuses on retaking areas around Kabul rather than reinforcing the troops along the Pakistani border.

  • Lots of clever ideas there but they all miss the point. Muslims think their religion is under attack.

  • I thought it was kind of interesting that both major papers went to out and out fiction to try and describe the situation.

    That's pretty weird.

As to your point, that's exactly the goal of the terrorists, or whatever you want to call them, in Pakistan, to create enough of a perception of external threat as to bring themselves and the rest of the country closer together.

They win with the image that Pakistan, and all they hold dear, religion, way of life, etc, are all under threat. (Their version of "they hate us for our freedoms.")
