Everybody's a socialist......

This is from the Washington Times, so take it for the ideological crap that it is, but still....
Republican Party officials say they will try next month to pass a resolution accusing President Bush and congressional Republican leaders of embracing "socialism," underscoring deep dissension within the party at the end of Mr. Bush's administration.

I doubt that whatever comes out of the RNC meeting will actually use the word "socialism," but it really does highlight how far off the deep end the remaining Republican rump has fallen.

(PS. Republicans are still lining up to defend "Barack the Magic Negro." There are some who think that sending out that CD will help vault Saltsman into a runoff.)

Later: It's a good point to put both of these into the context of the RNC chair race. Duncan, the frontrunner, backed the bailouts.

  • One can only wonder if the Republican concept that "criticising a sitting President during time of war is tantamount to treason" will still exist after January 20. Will criticising the Commander-in-Chief still be equivalent to "undermining the troops"? Will the curious notion that there are no real limits on Executive authority fall by the wayside? And what of the mysterious Fourth Branch of government? Stay tuned for the next episode of "One Lie to Live", sponsored by Gall. When you've got double standards, you've got Gall.

What we are seeing here is the reliable tactic of redefining words so that they mean something else entirely to your base than they do to the rest of the country. Socialism is now "spending money on something other than war or police-state surveillance". Similarly, the word "treason" was long ago re-defined as "failure to strenuously agree with Bush Administration policies". It all plays well to the "base", who are the only "true Americans", after all - another re-definition.

Beyond that, a minority Party going into battle should be backing their elected shills, not placing them in an untenable position. This is a Party that has fundamentally refused to accept that it has lost. That's why we see the myth of a "centre-right nation". In the crazy bubble that Republicans exist in, the vast majority still believe in them, but they were deceived the evil Media and failed to actually cast their votes for the GOP. And that unpredictable economy just went bust out of nowhere, for no reason at all. But once the electorate gets a glimpse of the unspeakable terrors that the Obama Administration has in store for them, they'll come crawling back and beg for the chance to vote Republican again.

Mike, I know that we've disagreed on the future of the Republican Party before, but if they were making some kind of feeble attempt to engage anyone beyond their base, I'd concede in a heartbeat that they are not sliding into irrelevance.

Where was this belief in fiscal restraint when they were writing blank cheques to Bush? Why wasn't Medicare prescription drug coverage considered "socialism" when Bush proposed it and signed it into law?
This is Party that essentially is saying that Bush was unpopular because he didn't go far enough to the Right. They have now staked everything on that notion, which is patently delusional.

  • One of my great unwritten posts is that this transition is different from any previous because of the vast amounts of online history. Unlike in the past, all those home bloggers/videographers will be able to pull up and edit together all those past statements by everybody, so that when they speak for or against the new president, we'll have the video of them saying the exact opposite.

Also, There was that debate after the loss over the direction of the GOP, I think the near term answer has become that the just didn't Republican hard enough, that they needed to be more stringent.

I'll admit it, I was wrong, you were right. I really didn't think they could be that stupid.

I may write a post on that tomorrow. I'll certainly credit you.
