The McCain appearances (mob scenes) are becoming the story
Both the WaPo and Politico have profile articles about the ugliness breaking out at the McCain/Palin events. It's also becoming a topic on TV. (Add: Dickerson in Slate. WSJ (sort of,) and I'm sure there are more.)
The point is that the crazy hate scenes are making the press, and there's no way that's helping McCain. It's a drag against any value the character attacks might have, because it makes them seem crazy and out there.
(What's the psychological component in all this overflowing hate?)

It is pretty insane. I ran across this little video from a rally in Pennsylvania.
If you have five minutes, it's extremely interesting to see the vitriol from the McCain supporters. They're not just hurling insults at Obama, but at the Obama supporters who are outside the rally in protest.
And not once do they mention an issue of policy. It's just the typical "terrorist," "Muslim," "get a job," and even a couple of "commie faggot"s get thrown out there.
But the special place in my heart goes out to the guy who provides his two cents on what should happen to women who are forced to pay for their own rape kits...

Yeah, I saw a different one, but yeah, it's out of control.
I'm in a hurry, but from your description, I'll check that one out later.
Any guess where this is all coming from?

Watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh. How could this not be happening?

Yeah, I know it's fomented, but what's the fear behind the anger?
Straight racism? Maybe angry white male feeling powerless lashing out at the future?
If you think about the great mob scenes through history, they're almost always about scapegoating.
I dunno.
