Maliki speaks favorably of Obama's Iraq position.

I don't know what it's worth, but Maliki pretty openly endorses Obama's Iraq policy, in an interview with Der Spiegel.

Coming from the death sport that is Iraqi politics, they're pretty savvy, so when you see an interview like this granted right at the maximum focus on Obama and Iraq, and right on the heels of the "time horizon" for withdrawal statements the Iraqis required of the Bush administration, you gotta wonder.

Regarding McCain, Maliki indelicately tries to say nothing at all.

  • Maybe Obama will apologize for all the death and destruction? I can't see him going quite that far somehow.

  • No. At least not to the Iraqis. He'll frame it as a US strategic mistake, talk about the US costs, but no. No real apology to the Iraqis.

  • This development is potentially big for Obama. By making these statements, Maliki implicitly gives his approval (in advance of the visit) to any parties that might want to make overtures to Obama. Even if other leaders only make statements about easy he is to work with, he comes out of the trip looking like the guy with the most potential for reconciliation and withdrawal.

The McCain camp is going to regret pushing this tour.

  • That's a good point , Todd.

I would also add that it indicates that Maliki IS willing to tamper in the US election. There are alot of things he could do to tinker with the discussion.
