Picture of the Day - 2

(Afghanistan's drugs trade and its failure to tackle corruption are prolonging the Taliban militia's insurgency, a secret British government document seen by the Daily Telegraph warns. "Karzai (seen here in 2007) chooses to avoid rocking the boat with powerful narco figures and has not blocked their appointment as governors or other senior officials," the document said.(AFP/File/Shah Marai))

  • To me, this photo captured the overwhelmed and exhausted Karzai.

  • To me, it looks as if he has been sampling the local "produce".

Khalilizad may very well be the next puppet in line.

  • That's running around out there, but I'm skeptical.

He might be able to deal with the KAbul business guys, but the warlords and the rurals will be against him.

He can't cut deals with the drug guys or the Taleban sympathetic areas.

I just don't see how that goes down.

  • Who thought al-Maliki could stay in power this long? Foreign muscle goes a long way, if all you are interested in is staying on top and not fixing anything.

Khalilizad probably couldn't win a fair election, though, so it's a moot point.
