I think the real story is outside the meeting.....

The photos below are of the pro-Clinton protests outside the DNC this morning. The first was the largest gathering I could find on the wire photos. The second is from earlier in the morning by the folks at Americablog.

But, I think as telling, watch some of the CNN raw footage of the protesters and listen to how few there really are. Looks like maybe 1,000 people...? You would think they could turn out more people than that just from the Washington/Maryland/Virginia area.

Imagine if the Obama folks had called for volunteers and a presence. I would think it would be more than this.

  • From a NYT article:

"One woman, wearing a blue “Team Hillary” shirt, shoved a man in a suit and tie wearing a small Obama button on his lapel. Another woman in a white Clinton shirt hung her head in her hands.

“That was a crime!” a man shouted. “McCain in ’08! McCain in ’08!” a woman yelled from the back of the room. “No-bama! No-bama!”"

Let's be clear. These are not Democrats. These are not folks who are concerned about America, but about... I don't know exactly. Some are as equally anti-Obama as they are pro-Hillary (and I heard/read some ugly, nasty Ferraro-esque stuff from these people).

And to think, a single speech from Hillary could stop all this... Yet she not only refuses, but fans their misguided passions. I think history will record the final chapter of the Clintons as tragedy. As actors who didn't know when to exit the stage gracefully.

  • They've also been whipped into a frenzy. These are the most of the most.

And I don't think one speech would change it. I think it would take a significant trail commitment.

Emotions will fade in time. We'll have to see.

  • A single speech would change the direction of how the media report these things. But you're right, the frenzied masses will not just flip a switch and go away.

Again, some (many) of the frenzied masses are clearly and irrationally anti-Obama... spouting right-wing and hate radio talking points. I kind of think the more vocal of these folks really have some racial fears and misgivings. (Yeah, I know... there goes Eric with all that "racial" stuff....)

  • Personally, I don't think it's racial as much as just passionate support for their candidate gone awry.

I think race comes out among some of these, but more as part of an emotional outburst. (And I'm talking about the incredibly well off like those who flew in for the protests yesterday, not the obvious racism we saw in WV.)

    I agree completely.
And this "count every vote" stuff is nonsense. As I've pointed out here before, a primary is not a "real" election. You have no right to vote in a primary, and thus you cannot be "disenfranchised".

I watched part of a soccer match in a local park yesterday. Before the match, there were practise shots on goal (penalty kicks). I couldn't help but think of the losers of the match screeching "Count Every Goal!" and contending that these practise shots were "real" goals. Pretty much everyone would think that would be silly, but here we are...
