  • Interesting. Sadr essentially concedes Basra to Maliki, and at the same time threatens open warfare. Is the latter just bluster? Sadr may be weakening, and losing Iranian support.

  • That "Sadr losing Iranian support is a kinda undertow I'm seeing in some of the reporting. We don't really have a sense if that is temporary, or coordinated, or the result of self interest or discussions with Maliki or the US.

    And, I don't know if he's conceding Basra. I think he's conceding the fighting for now. His goal is the political goal of the October (scheduled) provincial elections.

    You have to judge it all in the context of that. He's not trying to take over the country militarily, he's trying to use his militias to create political effects.
