The AP confirms the torture cabinet

It's official, and you gotta love the "insulated" deniability for Bush.
The Associated Press has learned that top Bush administration officials, from Vice President Dick Cheney on down, signed off on using harsh interrogation techniques against terrorist suspects after asking the Justice Department to endorse their legality.

The officials also took care to insulate President Bush from a series of meetings after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks where CIA interrogation methods, including waterboarding, were discussed and ultimately approved.

Not that they thought they were doing anything wrong.

  • Perhaps the "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"? Usually there are some morally and ethically deprived people in every administration. McNamara and Kissinger come to mind. But this band of thieves and murders is larger than Nixon's staff and exponentially worse. What a horrible group of people with no socially redeeming value. And they're in power!!!

  • It's truly amazing that this was decided this specifically at this level. The only thing I can think is that they knew they were at the line and everyone wanted a say in the risk they were taking.

It's just perverse that they were deciding case by case, technique by technique.

(Also note that Cheney ran the transition team that was responsible for selecting all of these people (besides Tenet), at least as candidates, for their jobs.)

  • So much for Bush being "the Decider."
