Keeping the next Iraq NIE secret?

Somehow I don't think this is going to fly (no matter how helpful it would be for John McCain.)
A new National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq is scheduled to be completed this month, according to U.S. intelligence officials. But leaders of the intelligence community have not decided whether to make its key judgments public, a step that caused an uproar when key judgments in an NIE about Iran were released in November.

The classified estimate on Iraq is intended as an update of last summer's assessment, which predicted modest security improvements but an increasingly precarious political situation there, the U.S. officials said.

They can maintain their claims that "the surge" worked so long as no one really examines the political and economic progress that has not happened.

(I would expect to see lots more McCain friendly "national security" acts by this administration.

Take this one yesterday where the NorthCom commander trumpeted that Al Qaeda is plotting to attack the US despite "no credible information telling us about an imminent threat to homeland at this time.")

  • "the NorthCom commander trumpeted that Al Qaeda is plotting to attack the US despite "no credible information telling us about an imminent threat to homeland at this time.""

This is despicable fear-mongering and nothing else. It is little more than "makin' shit up." Of course our fine, fine journalistic community buries the "no credible information" bit waaaay below the headline, if at all, and all the people watching cable get is "Al Quaeda planning attacks on US to shape elections!"

Under a future president, I hope generals like this get sacked for such maleficence.

  • sickening, and yet they vote for this kind of leadership. Hide facts in plain sight and pretend they don't exist.

  • Remember 2004.

If you can control the news, you can control the country.

  • Firstly, I would like to tell you your blog is amazing and I really enjoy reading through your postings. This postings struck my eye like no other. When you stated " their claims that the surge worked so long as no one really examines the political and economic progress that has not happened", the assumption is that our goal in this war is not to exported democracy. You are assuming that it is ALL about the oil.

Secondly, oil is not what keeps this war going. Fixing what America has broken is what makes the war continue to this day. We create chaos and now its our responsiblity to fix what is our mess. Leaving Iraq now would now benefit them at all, but with help from our allies we can rebuild Iraq so they can govern themselves.
