WTF is going on in the Pentagon/Iraq military command

On Wednesday, Gen Petraeus stated there had been a spike of EFP attacks since the start of the year pointing a very accusatory finger at Iran.

On Friday, Sec Def Gates repeated this.

Today,
US: EFP attacks in Iraq declining

The U.S. military said Sunday that attacks in Iraq linked to Iranian explosive devices have fallen off in recent days after a sharp increase earlier in the month, and that the overall flow of weaponry from Iran has dropped.'

If you read these, they are not completely exclusionary stories, but the switch in tone from Wednesday to today is notable.

  • This really doesn't inspire any confidence in their methodology for assessing the true state of affairs. Do you have any idea how they determine which explosive devices are linked to Iran?

  • They have after action teams that broadly assemble the data.

However, with the number of attacks, I doubt that they go into the level of detail of actually digging through the bomb parts trying to determine origin.

Basically, if they see any element of what they think is an EFP, certain explosive or copper residues they call it an EFP.

And, in the current definitions, all EFP's come from Iran (despite the evidence that there have been several fabrication "factories" discovered in Iraq.)

That's why this is so interesting to me because they're casting impressions upon very inconclusive data which means there are other reasons they're stating these conclusions.
