Picture of the Day - 4

Talking heads frequently opine as to whether Americans are ready for a black candidate, but I think the bigger question is whether the media is ready for a black candidate.

Just today, we've already seen innumberable bits of shocked analysis by these media figures pointing out that "lilly white" Iowa voted for a black man.

But, maybe the people of Iowa were simply voting for a candidate who happens to be black.

You know what I mean?

  • My sentiments exactly. Your opening paragraph sums it up nicely.

As usual, the commercial media is out of touch with normal Americans.

  • The Obama peolple just are dying for some hope and honesty. They're so sick of the lying, deceit and murderous policies of the Bush Regime. They voted for change. They're definitely looking for a breath of fresh air in a fetid marketplace of political ideas.

  • Actually, it's giving lily-white Iowa way too much credit to say that it voted for Obama. All you can really say is that 38% of Iowa's Democrats voted for Obama. Those folks, obviously, are ready to vote for a good candidate who just happens to be African-American.

I'm very skeptical as to whether 51% (or thereabouts) of the entire country is ready to do the same.

  • Tom, let me answer you first,

That's a very fair point as to only 38% in Iowa. (among democrats.)

I might argue about the 51% nationwide, though. I would certainly accept that there's some percentage that will not vote for a black man (or likely a woman) but I would also posit that those people were not likely to vote Democratic anyway.

Really, the question would be, "what percentage of those people are in the Dem party/independent? What percentage would be likely to vote for a democratic candidate no matter who it was?"

I don't think that number is that high.

    ....

Matt, I'm with ya. I actually think his race sort of helps differentiate that change message.

    ....

    EPM, .....and water is wet.

  • Hey MATT??
You mentioned this "They're so sick of the lying, deceit and murderous policies of the Bush Regime." What do you think so far of the Obama regime??
