Mike Huckabee continues his pitch for McCain's VP

This Politico report leaves little doubt that Huckabee is running for McCain's VP slot as he defends McCain and calls Romney a liar.

(Huckabee would be a great VP candidate/attack dog. The media plays him as this nice Christian guy when in reality he's one of the sharpest tongued on the trail.)

  • It's a shame McCain felt the need to climb into bed with the evangelicals if that combination would come to fruition.

I liked him a lot more in his "agents of intolerance" days.

  • Me, too, I was a McCain supporter in 2000, but he lost in those days.

You can't win with only the libertarian and business wings of the Republican party. That may get you money, but there's no passion, no organization and no volunteers.

  • Well, that seems to be it.

In a McCain presidency, he'd have a Huckabee to sic on people.

In an Obama presidency, he'd have a (presumably?) Edwards to help talk to any white people who were suspicious of a 'black' president.

Unless there are some unexpected upsets in the primaries to come, this is how I'd expect it to go. Anybody else have a projection?

And, of course, unless the current administration organizes or allows another Big 9 Event 11 that leads to martial law.

  • You know, I don't know if Edwards takes VP with his past experience and his wife's situation.

Of course if he doesn't, it pretty much ends his political career.

And I don't know if Obama wants any reminders of Kerry.

There was a rumor last week that Obama had sounded out the idea of Edwards as a Attorney General. I don't know if there were strings attached.

One name to keep an eye on is Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sibelius. She's another up and comer who is doing the Dem response to Bush's SOTU and she scores very well with heartland whites.

  • And, I think the McCain Huckabee is the perfect fit. McCain could pretend to be honorable while Huckabee does the dirty work. And the GOP factions mesh up right.

  • Huckabee is leading in the markets by 2 to 1 over any individual for vp, but there are so many possibilities it is still a 5 to 1 shot.

McCain Huckabee would be a pretty strong ticket.

  • Yeah, VP is usually very hard to predict, even when you're sure of the pres candidate.

And there are markets on VP?

  • Prognostication of VP selection is like predicting the weather on a certain day in New England six month out. Who woulda thought Lieberman in 2000 this early in the process?

Edwards' career in elected politics is probably over. After calling for caution in my previous paragraph, I feel confident there's NO WAY Edwards agrees to ride shotgun again. Maybe he'd be interested in AG or some other high profile cabinet position, but right now I think he'll probably go the Gore route. Becoming a public policy evangelist, either alone or as part of some think tank or foundation.

I could see where a McCain/Huckabee ticket might look appealing, but aren't both of these men disliked by the GOP institution? Maybe the GOP tries, once again, to use the fundies as the voter livestock. Then again, maybe the fundies have had enough of that and having Huck as vp just doesn't cut it. Is there any chance in the world that McCain would let Huck have the untethered free reign and unchecked authority that Bush has given Cheney? I doubt it.

Also floated (though I think highly improbable) would be a McCain/Rice (as in Condi) ticket. Demographically that would just be fun to watch, but on political achievement and character warmth, I think Rice would drag the GOP ticket something wicked.

  • And how'd that Lieberman work out for ya?

I agree Edwards won't go VP, but I could see him dropping to AG where he could really do direct things that make a difference. Assuming he could survive the ego drop.

As for the Gore route, he's been sort of trying that for the last few years and hasn't gotten any real penetration. Of course, he can afford to do it....

I think McCain and Huckabee would have hard ground rules, and Huckabee would be returned to the traditional ceremonial VP role.

Does National security McCain think Huckabee should be "one heartbeat away?"

And Rice may be popular among Republicans but she'd be hell on the trail. She's a very poor public speaker who comes across as frail. But I saw that rumor too.

  • The Lieberman Factor: is the point you're making that picking a name that's not been on the trail for the past x months is risky? While I think Lieberman is a churlish, self-centered spoil-sport, but was he really a drag on the ticket in 2000?

An Obama/Boxer would be an interesting ticket. Add that to Dodd as senate president, I'd be pretty happy with the future of America for the next 8 yrs.

I'm not sure how Edwards plans to bring his policy wishes into fruition, short of winning the presidency. We'll see how serious he is as time unfolds. I'm hoping he doesn't just go for the ranting from a think tank route. He's no Gore. It won't work.

The question with Huckabee is: is he willing to be a token fundie. McCain will pander to the Religious Right, but his head's not in that game. So let's say Huck has no problem being the token. Not a stretch. Then the question is: is the fundie base willing to follow the bait or have they had enough. Bush was the closest they've come -- or will come -- to a Fundie in Chief. If he wasn't able to deliver....

  • The market tracks minutia in the election including stuff like "will Bloomberg enter the race."

You should check it out. There is historical charts and everything. Caution: very addictive.
