America wants change

Whether you're crazy right, independent, or left, the message tonight is clear: America wants change. America wants a change from George Bush.

  • Yeah. Big time. At least in Iowa.

I'm stunned by the trouncing Mitt got.

  • I'm glad that Hillary came in 3rd. We knew that the GOP wanted her in so they could take her down.

  • I mentioned Mitt's trouncing by Huck, but looking at the number, Clinton and Edwards were trounced by a similar margin by Obama.

It's going to be an interesting 5 days here in NH.

  • EPM, I'm really amazed by the gaps as well. To me, it's not so big that Clinton came in third, but that she lost by 8%.

  • McCain's got Joementum!

A heck of a lot more people turned out for the Democratic primaries, despite the stupid caucus system, than did for the Republican straw vote.

Will we get to see the GOP implode?

  • The caucus system works just fine. We're picking delegates from the start for the county, state and national conventions.

Just because it's not easily understood doesn't mean it's stupid.

  • Todd, hard to say. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out, but, really, if your choice wa Romney or Huckabee, how enthusiastic would you be?

    ...

Matt, I agree. it's a little complex, but it's designed to winnow choices through the second choice thing in a way that other states don't have to worry about.

I wish Iowa carried a little less exclusionary weight going forward. (I mean third place shouldn't be dead.) But I really like having the smaller states first, that way it's not just TV money.

  • I live in a caucus state, I've caucused three times, I understand the system, and it seems pretty stupid to me.
Your vote should be secret, but it can't possibly be secret in a caucus. Instead, it's a way for the Party machine to manipulate things, as well as to keep tabs on how well certain people fall into line.
I like "second choice", but you can have runoff voting on a secret ballot and achieve the same end.

  • Agreed.

  • Cripes you don't go to the gulag in a caucus. I like it because it forces you to make a stand. No weaseling behind a secret ballot. You make a choice and live by that choice. period. I guess I've never backed away from confrontation.
