Question

If Iran benefits from high oil prices, isn't all the threatening rhetoric helping Iran?

  • Good question. The New Yorker had an article over this very thing and concluded Iran gets million extra a day when the rhetoric comes rolling out.

  • It just strikes me as very counterproductive because that extra income is going to weapons and to programs that make the current government more popular.

  • there has been some good work done that suggests the reason that the iranian administration is popular at all is that it is standing up to a bellicose washington. on domestic policies they aren't popular at all.

i certainly wouldn't characterise people in iran having a fanatical devotion to ahmadinejad - in fact he is not the person who has the real power - he is a figurehead
