Ah, so we're going to go Noriega on Venezuela.....
The Bush administration has tried the coup against Chavez. They tried funding the media and opposition. Now they'll take a shot at the Noriega option.
Did you know that within US law there is a designation of "narco-terrorism" under which (technically) US terrorism statutes can be applied?
I don't think we're going there right now, but it does open a door.
Colombian drug kingpins in league with corrupt Venezuelan military officers are increasingly using this country as a way station for smuggling cocaine to the United States and Europe, according to Colombian and U.S. officials. The Bush administration's dismal relations with Venezuela's government have made matters worse, anti-drug agencies say, paralyzing counternarcotics cooperation.

NPR was pimping a story last week about a Venezuela/Colombia drug cabal. That just seemed all to neatly tied up and delivered with a cute little bow for me. I'm sure there's a very extensive black market and illicit drug matrix in place in South America.
I honestly don't know enough about Chavez that is truthful to judge the man or his policies. I just don't think the MSM propaganda machine realizes that it turns people off by pumping out blatant propaganda designed for the rubes.
It will be interesting to see how the US gets rid of Chavez. Or at least tries to again.

I agree. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if there were drugs flowing through Venezuela, but there are also drugs flowing through Mexico largely unchallenged/unmentioned.
My opinion is that Chavez is a mixed bag. He has done some substantial things for the poor, but he's also become a dictator. Probably the turning point is when he pushed through the "president for life" measure.
The polling I've seen still shows substantial support for Chavez (largely among the poor,) but I have no idea whether that is accurate.
We haven't seen large scale repression, but the beginning elements of that seem to be emerging.
So bad guy who has done some good things. But, as he accumulates power, I would expect more bad things, you know?
Just my opinion.

He may come off looking like a thug but he doesn't really want to allow foreign intel NOC's pushing astro-turf 'popular' revolt that will just reinstate an Argentinian style status quo. Argentina, where the president's wife is going to be elected that smacks of an 'el jefe' for life to me. Who's after that his sons, daughters, brothers, cousins?
Shrugging off the oppressive classes isn't easy.

Oh, definitely. That's what I'm saying. He's a mixed bag. He's doing things that benefit alot of the Venezuelan people, but at the same time, he's also consolidating alot of power.

I'm admittedly pro-Chavez, but you have to consider the arrangement that his "Bolivarian Republic" replaced. The Punto Fijo Accord stated that the two political parties would alternate in power forever, in order to maintain stability. Elections were 'fixed' in order to assure that the chosen party would take power when their "turn" came around.
The U.S. loved it. We were assured of always dealing with people who knew how "play ball" (i.e. submit to our wishes) and Venezuela was frozen into a client state arrangement where its economy was based on providing us cheap oil.
Chavez ended that, so of course we are going to bad-mouth him. The opposition are the people who got all the breaks under the old system. They got free college educations at U.S. colleges, after which they slid into cush jobs in the old-boy network and retired wealthy. They are arrogant, racist, spolied brats who now have to compete fairly, and they hate it.
Can you imagine if the Democrats refused to accept Bush's win in 2004 and publically called on a foreign country to overthrow Bush and put them in power? Now THAT is treason, and that's what the Venezuelan opposition has been doing for years. Only in the "dicatorship" of Chavez can you turn on the TV and watch the equivalent of CNN calling for the CIA to kill your president and replace him with a dictator friendly to a foreign country.
I fail to understand how the U.S. never had an issue with all other political parties (beyond the chosen two) being banned for 50 years, but now we are bent out of shape because one party is so popular it can't lose elections.
