Picture of the Day

(NYTimes) Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, convened an emergency security meeting with Turkey’s top officials on Sunday night, in Ankara...

Ms. Rice called him shortly before the meeting began and asked him to “allow us a few days,” Mr. Erdogan said on national television.

(AP) "The PKK claimed Sunday it captured a number of Turkish soldiers. Eight soldiers were missing, according to private NTV television. There was no official confirmation of the capture."

(BBC) "a news agency believed to be linked to the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) named seven of the missing troops.....

(Turkish) Newspapers have been showing photographs of the dead soldiers, most of them young conscripts, alongside angry headlines screaming for revenge."

Imagine being asked to sit on your hands with eight soldiers in enemy terrorist hands.

(Again, the PKK seems to want this invasion by Turkey and will likely continue the provocative attacks(terrorism) until they get it.)

UPDATE: (AP) "Dozens of Turkish military vehicles loaded with soldiers and heavy weapons rumbled toward the Iraq border on Monday after an ambush by rebel Kurds that killed 12 soldiers and left eight missing." (This doesn't mean they're going across, but it's more pressure.)

  • Let's see. In how many world wars have the Turks been on the other side.

  • So, who's side are we on? This is an administration that cannot function in shades of gray. A thing is either black or it's white. So, who are the good guys and who are the evildoers?

  • What is the difference between the PKK and Hezbollah, or Hamas? We make no substantive objection to the Israelis' harsh punishment of the entire population of Gaza because of Hamas. But the PKK is apparently a kinder, gentler form of terrorist.

I'm not saying the Kurds ought to be punished because of the PKK, the way the Palestinians are being punished in Gaza. I'm just letting off a little steam about the hypocrisy of our war on terror, as well as our stubborn support of Israel, no matter what they do to innocent Palestinians.

  • It's getting hotter.

I still foresee a potential nightmare for the Turks if they try any sustained operations, although if they have good intel, they might pull off some snatch and grabs.

I think one very real problem they will have if anything goes down is that the PKK has elements and support across a fair section of Turkey leaving a broad exposure.

    ...

ALSO, the gap within the US's hypocrisy is being greatly exposed.

The US invaded Iraq on far less, is justifying operations around the world on far less, and greenlighted the ISraelis based on the capture of one soldier (who was really pretty safe.)

This is nearly the final nail in what little remained of American credibility regarding "terror."

  • Bush can't deal with nuance but I think you can count on him to do what's best for Israel and the oil industry.
