Does anyone else find this funny? Dan Rather explaining his lawsuit.

    back when 'Rathergate' was all over the news, the original question was whether Bush II was AWOL or not from his airbase in Alabama during Vietnam.

    The argument devolved into whether the documents used to verify facts had the right fonts or not.

    As far as I know, the questions around Bush Jr.'s flight status were never resolved.

    Let's hear a little less Rather-bashing, and see if we can stay on the subject.

    Local, I always had a sneaking suspicion that the whole thing was a Rove trick designed to immunize against the charge.

    Once those documents were challenged, they're could have been dout cast on any subsequent followup.

    I mean really, who happens to notice a wrong typeface and then goes back to check all available typefaces on the IBM typewriters of the time unless someone told them that might be worth looking at?

  • I don't see how there can be any doubt that the document was a Rovian plant. Rove was waving the typeface accusation almost before the report was aired.

    Rather's lawsuit gives him the right to discovery. This could be interesting.

  • Officially, the typeface challenge originated from a previously unheard of blogger of about as much noteriety as me.

    But, yeah....

    (And I hadn't thought about discovery, but isn't the lawsuit just against CBS for their treatment of him after the debunking? I don't think the source is included in the case, so unless he can say CBS knew of the false doc, I don't see how he could drag that in.)

  • As I understand it Rather is suing CBS for violating his contract by failing to provide him with a sufficient amount of airtime. The documents aren't a big factor. He, or his lawyers, obviously think this is the best line to take. We'll see.
