The other side on Iran

The US is pricking Russia and China on a number of fronts, so I guess it's no surprise that they would use Iran as a lever.
The leaders of Russia, China and Iran said Thursday that Central Asia should be left alone to manage its stability and security _ an apparent warning to the United States to avoid interfering in the strategic, resource-rich region.....

Russian President Vladimir Putin didn't mention the United States in his speech, but he said that "any attempts to solve global and regional problems unilaterally are hopeless."

  • A couple of other back page points on this.

    (AP) "
President Vladimir Putin said Friday that he had ordered the military to resume regular long-range flights of strategic bombers, a show of Russia's resurgent military power which comes amid a chill in relations with the United States.
    "

And, also a commentator on CNN tried to assuage me by telling me that this is all a part of Russian domestic politics looking ahead at their elections.

(Funny, they said the same thing about the Turkish buildup on the Kurds, yet the election came and went, and the threats and buildup are still there.)

If it's good for domestic politics preelection, it's good post election which means this assertive Russia ain't going away.

  • Russia and China both want the US out of Central Asia. The last straw for Putin was the missile defence thing in Poland and being told to extradite the ex-KGB guy to London. He's drawing a line in the sand and the Russian public like it.

  • Beyond just a "Monroe Doctrine" kinda thing, if Russia can claim some control over the Caspian oil and gas fields, they will have more pull on the world markets than anyone else.

Oh, and every nation likes to feel strong after a disaster. Look how well that's worked out through history.
