Dodd is one of those below the radar candidates that I'd really like to see more of. There's a certain unmanaged (sans handlers) authenticity in his campaigning that I find lacking in the other candidates.
I'd dearly love to see a autumnal shakeup in the the field... with the now-under-attended candidates getting some major traction.
As a teacher of high school seniors, I see every year how students are forced to make difficult and expensive choices for college (even families making about $25,000-$35,000 a year in NYC - a very expensive place to live - are NOT qualifying for full Pell Grants for college and are having to take out $40,000-$80,000 in loans over the course of four years.)
I appreciate Dodd's positions on student aid. He wants to raise the Pell Grant to about $12,000 a year in the next five years. The idea is, the Pell grant used to cover 70% of college costs for middle and working class kids, but now it only covers 30% of costs. The federal gov't is subsidizing student loan companies to offer loans to kids (and suck in 6.8% interest on student loans and 8.5% interest on parental loans), but Dodd says why not have the gov't go back into the Direct Loan business, cut out the subsidies and help both students AND taxpayers (while hurting the crooked loan companies.) I say "What a great idea!" Of course, the crooks in the financial aid departments in colleges all across the country won't be too happy when they stop getting kickbacks from the student loan companies, but after all, who are we trying to help here.
Really, everybody likes Dodd. I gotta say that I'm surprised because he's just such a non-entity in my thinking. I know he's come out hard on the war, but I really know very little beyond that about his campaign.
His politics may be just great, but I just don't think he's going to factor. I always considered him as running for the Vice Presidency against Bill Richardson.
This is not the America I was brought up to believe in.
This blog seeks to highlight abuse of power, deception, corruption, and just plain bad ideas in government and corporations.
