But, but, but, wait.... The sign says "Ask Mitt anything....."

  • "Mr. Romney, is this an attempt to win people's favor by appearing more accessable than you really are?"

  • In so much better taste than mine.

  • Sadly, no one really seems to know what goes on behind those eyes.

  • God, I would love to see his phone number show up in the DC madam's list of customers.

  • Probably not going to happen. If for no other reason than that he wasn't travelling in those circles at the time.

  • Didn't know where to stick this... Hope it doesn't get lost:

(AP) "Based on the report Romney filed with the Federal Election Commission over the weekend, his spending was so prolific he had to lend his committee $6.5 million during the quarter, allowing him to cover the difference between $20.5 million he spent and the $14 million he raised."

  • I covered his loan when it was announced. (We didn't know the significant amount then.)

Romney's finances are going to become more of a story in the 3rd and 4th quarter. He's really taxed his fundraising channels to get to here, and I would bet alot of that will dry up especially with the addition of Fred Thompson.

The trick for the Romney campaign is to continue putting his money in, but still making it look like a popular movement.

  • Oh. I remember reading your posting on the loan, now. At the time I just thought he was adding to the kitty. This story gives the impression the loan was necessary just to keep the campaign going... that is, it was for gas not gravy. Also, his burn rate seems to suggest whatever appeal he as is because he's purchased it. ie marketing.

  • The loan wasn't completely necessary because he had carryover from last quarter that would have covered it, but, it would have left him with very little cash on hand, and right now he's fighting a legitimacy battle on whether he can really compete throughout the party.

The appearance of money (not his) is important, and the appearance of keeping up with Giuliani is critical.
