Picture of the Day

Yesterday, the Bushes took part in the taping of a Christmas special at Ford's Theater. Check out this quote.
"President Lincoln had a great appreciation for the performing arts," Bush said. "They offered relief amid the agonies of war, and he would likely be pleased that Ford's Theatre continues to bring together talented performers from across our country, including those with us tonight."

Did he really just praise Lincoln's love of Ford's Theater?

  • Each day that passes I feel I journey deeper into the absurd...

ABC is usually puts this patriotic, presidential gala out in July. They're sooting instead for xmas to grab a bigger audience... bigger ratings. I think it's quite possible that by the time xmas rolls around Bush will be so disliked by so many Americans this will be a ratings stinker... Best make hay while the sun shines, as they say. With polls tracking the way they are, I can't see how he'll pull in bigger numbers for ABC in six month. Better to have shot for the patriotic 4 July angle than the season of Peace, Love and Joy (talk about your oxymorons, vis a vis Bush)

  • I did notice that the stars were decidedly b list.

"Yolanda Adams, Olivia Newton-John and Jon Secada, comedian Christopher Titus and "Dancing with the Stars" dancers Jonathan Roberts and Karina Smirnoff."

Tell me in 2002, 2003 that he wouldn't have had the big names.

  • Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that... Real second tier stuff.

It's like playing the county fair circuit...

  • The photo makes this look like a cross between a Perry Como Christmas special circa 1965 and a set on the Praise-The-Lord network.

  • EPM, would you stake your career on Bush's popularity come Christmas?

    ...

    Local,

Isn't that the target audience of the Laura Bush/Christmas special nexus?

  • Who was it that said "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligences of the American public"? No. I wouldn't stake my career on ANYTHING to do with politics, including Bush's popularity. But is seems ABC is willing to gamble on it. Then again, they probably don't have much coin in the game, given the "talent" list.

  • For ABC, it's apparently a tradition, so they had to air it sometime. And frankly, Christmas special X will always get some kind of ratings.

(Or they could bury it during Christmas.)
