Giuliani employs a priest who covered up child molestation?

I don't know if the allegations are true, but after Giuliani's loyalty to Bernie Kerik after he knew Bernie was mobbed up, you gotta wonder.

(After we saw what it really takes to get thrown out of the Catholic church, can you really doubt there's mud on this guy?)

Later: So, this week the "Rudy abandons the ISG" story comes out, and now this reemerges? (RBE points that out in comments.)

What a week for anti-Giuliani oppo research. Welcome to the race Fred Thompson.

  • The Washington Post reported the same story as part of a front page "Rudy's got lots of loyalty and lots of cronies around him" article on May 13 of this year. Here's the link:

  • Thanks. The ISG story was old, too, but suddenly came back with more color and detail.

    Oppo research from Fred Thompson?

  • Maybe Thompson, but more likely reporters just smell blood in the waters around Rudy and are pouncing. Most reporters are bullies and cowards, so they won't take a guy who's "strong" on, but when that "strength" starts to ebb...

Interestingly enough, Bloomberg gets lots of adulatory coverage now, but he's got some skeletons too and I will be interested to see if the press ever stops fellating him long enough to dig into him. For instance, no one knows where he lives. I'm not kidding. He doesn't live in Gracie Mansion and refuses to divulge where he does live. Also, he refuses to tell people where he goes on weekends. It's a secret. Some people surmise that he jets off to an island he owns in the tropics (Mr. anti-global warming jetting off ever week in his private plane), but no one is really sure. He's got some weird things going on there, and while he can get away w/ it as mayor, I cannot imagine he can run for president and not divulge these things (especially since the other candidates are all under the microscope.) But he won't - because he thinks he lives under different rules than everyone else.

  • You know, I agree with the blood in the water, but I'm also a big believer in political reporters being tipped on stuff like this.

I just find it too convenient that a bunch of Giuliani's old problems, that cut to the core of his "tough stance" (ISG against foreign policy, protecting the priest against law and order) just happen to reemerge the week before Thompson puts himself on stage as the real candidate.

Very possible I'm wrong, but that goes on so frequently around th enegative stories.

As for Bloomberg, I'm not taking it too seriously. I see the flaws and unliklihood of success even without the dirty details you point to.

The media is excited because it presents a fun discussion story, and a chance to bash both parties at the same time. (Plus, mayor mike might be their employer some day, so being on the record now effusing praise might not be such a bad move, you know?)

I'm not taking it too seriously even without the secret weekends.

  • You're right about the oppo research, I guess I didn't articulate it well. The stories are out there and have been for a while (Cilliza of The Fix says he gets 5 dozen or more a day in his email box) but when there's blood in the water, reporters are more likely to do the story.

Don't underestimate $1 billion to $2 billion dollars, however. He wasn't taken seriously in NY in 2000-2001 either. A shitload of money can change an awful lot of things, and while Moneybags prbably can't win outright, he surely can guarantee Mitt or Fred in the WH and some real right wing nuts on the Court to replace the 87 year old liberal Justice Stevens and the 70+ Justice O'Connor.

  • And Romney has a henchman, er aid who has a cop complex. A little digging shows this guy to be a little unhinged when it comes to his self-image as an enforcer for Romney.

Mitt may be the smiling, white bread, face of purity, but under the skin I think things get ugly real fast.

  • Yeah. I find it interesting that now that the big time reporters are starting to gain a little more exposure to the less formal mode of blogging, we're beginning to hear more and more about oppo research.

    It's not just Chris Cilizza.

As for Bloomberg's ability to tip the race, yeah, but if he is running on his own money, does he really stay in that long if the polling has him at 10%? Just curious.

(On the dirty side, maintaining the Bush tax cuts might be worth $100 million or so to Bloomberg.)

    ...

EPM, I agree. There's something strangely unsettling about that Romney veneer. It's like a bad scifi movie when you think you see movement under the skin.

And, I didn't blog the Romney cop thing because they handled it right. A campaign worker went way out of line and was (temporarily?) suspended.

The reason this Giuliani thing is something is because he's hanging onto this guy like Bush on Gonzales.
