Gates is fighting PR at the top of the US command.

The interesting thing to me about this is that Peter Pace's office is the one distributing this idea that he didn't quit or step aside. Pace wants it on the record that he didn't quit.

Also of interest, a day after Gen. Petraeus got blasted over his seemingly overoptimistic comments, ""astonishing signs of normalcy" in half, perhaps two-thirds of Baghdad," Sec Def Gates is in Baghdad trying to temper those comments, "It's a very mixed picture," Gates told reporters.

The Pace move completes the clearing of the decks of the old Iraq military crowd. The new crowd will be able to tidy up Iraq and execute the Iran Plan much better.

Petraeus just jumped the gun a bit on the Surge script. Gates reminds him, “You have to milk it.”

  • Pace is really interesting because the administration said, he's the right man, best man for the job, but we're not going to keep him on because of the political fall out.

It's good to know that the politics outweighs the war.

On Gates/Petraeus, Gates has been properly careful in keeping expectations very low.
